A proposal for setting up a CAD-CAM laboratory exclusively for m ilitary supplies is under consideration. Kakinada: The JNTU Engineering College (JEC), Kakinada, is set to become a major stakeholder in the Indian Defence sector by designing components for weapons and other logistical support systems in a collaborative venture with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Fillip to researchA proposal for setting up a CAD-CAM laboratory at the JEC for exclusively catering to military supplies is under the consideration of the DRDO, according to JEC principal E.V. Prasad. Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Prasad has said a team of professors has recently given a presentation to the scientists of the DRDO about the facilities and expertise available in the JEC for meeting the Defence requirements. The proposal is most likely to get the official nod soon. The JEC will get Rs. 3 crore to develop the facility which will give a fillip to research activity at the JEC which has been largely confined to publishing technical papers. The JEC has apprised the DRDO of its ability to design and manufacture certain components for military aviation, bullet proof items and others which it might be asked to develop. The cooperation of Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju has been sought to get the prestigious project sanctioned for the JEC which has taken a few other initiatives to augment industry linkages. Permission for the CAD-CAM lab will pave the way for the JEC to plan more such projects in future. Funds will no longer be a constraint as the JEC has just been upgraded to JNTU, Kakinada. It can mobilise larger sums from the University Grants Commission in addition to the funding from All India Council of Technical Education. The JEC has a functional Industrial Consultancy Unit which offers testing services and expertise to various establishments in the public and private sectors.
