AIIMS doctors concerned over disinformation

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences Front for Social Consciousness on Thursday said it was concerned by the spread of disinformation regarding the clinical trials conducted by the Department of Paediatrics at the Institute.

“An attempt has been made to give an impression that the trials were unethical, guided by motives other than finding the best possible mode of patient care. It has also been implied that the agenda for these trials had been guided by the profit motive of the funding agencies. This has created a scare in the public mind and led to public statements demanding the stoppage of all clinical trials,” said Front convenor Anoop Saraya.

“It is very clear that the Department of Paediatrics had followed procedures related to the conduct of trials. Most of the trials were faculty initiated and conducted for research for the benefit of Indian patients. Also, some children inducted into the trials were very sick. They would have had a comparatively high rate of mortality even under the best existing treatment (which is in the range of 20-40 per cent as reported in various studies),” added Dr. Saraya.
