dated August 22, 1958: Arab States’ proposal

The United Nations General Assembly appeared on August 21 to be moving rapidly towards an end of its Middle East emergency session with early endorsement in sight for a peace plan agreed by the Arab States themselves. A motion formulating this agreement, which would have the effect of assuring the troubled Lebanon and Jordan of non-interference in their internal affairs, is expected to be tabled at any moment. This would have the Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld make practical arrangements in consultation with Governments to make possible early withdrawals of Anglo-American troops from Lebanon and Jordan. An overwhelming vote was confidently forecast for such a mandate.
