Remarkable

Wrestler Sushil Kumar, who has won the Olympic bronze, and boxer Vijender Kumar who has been assured of one, have performed a remarkable feat and made Beijing Olympics memorable for Indians.

The announcement of financial reward for winners is heartening, as it will encourage youngsters to pursue sports as a career. The government should take initiatives for developing sports and launch an Olympics mission to spot young, talented players and groom them.

India’s historic achievement in Beijing Olympics is inspiring. When our contingent left for Beijing, we hardly thought our players would win three individual medals. Our performance proves that anything can be achieved if concerted efforts are made. Let not this victory go in vain.

Sushil, Vijender and Abhinav are our new heroes. Their achievements have provided the silver lining to the dark cloud of Indian sports. We must look beyond cricket if we wish to make a mark in international sports.

Congratulations to Abhinav Bindra and Sushil Kumar who have made India proud. But it is quite obvious that their triumph came not because of the system but despite the system.

That there are not enough Abhinavs and Sushils in this country of 1.1 billion people defies logic. It is just that in India, sports are not given the importance they deserve. As a first step, it is important to sensitise people that cricket is not the only sport.

M.M. Krishna,

Indians have talent but it is not recognised at the right time. Youngsters work on their own to qualify for the Olympics. In this context, Sushil’s victory is indeed a big achievement.

If the authorities pay more attention to all sporting activities and provide sportspersons the required facilities, we can surely win more gold medals in international sports meets. If our governments, which announce cash rewards for winners, invest the same kind of money in training players, they will surely perform much better.

Neeraj Kumar,

Kurukshetra
