India in joint second spot

NEW DELHI: S.P. Sethuraman’s fourth successive victory and Prasanna Rao’s timely strike helped India overpower Philippines 2.5-1.5 to share the second spot after the sixth round of the World Youth (under-16) chess Olympiad at Mersin, Turkey, on Wednesday.

B. Adhiban slumped to his fourth consecutive defeat on the top board as India matched Philippines’ tally of 16 points. Russia, crushed by India in the second round, jumped to the top of the leader-board with a 4-0 thrashing of Armenia.

With four rounds to go, following a day of rest, India is surely rueing the absence of World junior runner-up Parimarjan Negi on the top board. India plays Georgia next while Russia comes up against Philippines.

The results: Sixth round: Philippines (16) lost to India (16) 1.5-2.5 (Wesley So bt B. Adhiban; Haridas Pascua lost to S.P. Sethuraman; Alcon John Datu lost to Prasanna Rao; Jan Emmanuel drew with K. Priyadarshan); Russia (17.5) bt Armenia (15.5) 4-0; Turkey ‘A’ (13.5) lost to Azerbaijan (15) 1-3; Georgia (15.5) bt Switzerland ‘A’ (12) 2.5-0.5; England (15.5) bt Turkey ‘C’ 4-0; Slovakia (15) bt Turkey ‘B’ (10.5) 4-0.
