MCD steps up measures to prevent dengue

Staff Reporter

Instructions given to health officials and malaria inspectors

‘At present, the temperature of Delhi is conducive for breeding of mosquitoes’

‘This year 61 cases of malaria have been reported compared with 49 cases last year’

NEW DELHI: Keeping in view the heavy rain of the past few weeks and increase in the incidence of dengue in its area, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has stepped up measures to prevent dengue and malaria.

Acting Mayor and MCD Malaria Committee chairman Divya Jaiswal and Deputy Leader of the House Ved Parkash Gupta directed officials of the Health Department in all the 12 zones as well as malaria inspectors to initiate steps to control dengue and malaria. They also appealed to citizens to ensure that mosquito breeding does not take place in and around their residences or work places.

According to Mr. Gupta, institutions that have been challaned for mosquitoes breeding in their premises include Maulana Azad Medical College, G.B.Pant Hospital, Central Public Works Department office on Minto Road, Metro Project situated on Thomson Road, Yatri Niwas at the New Delhi Railway Station, Sarvodaya Vidyalaya at INA, Okhla Railway Station, Desh Bandhu College and Sports Complex Tyagraj Nagar.

Mr. Jaiswal said: “At present, the maximum and minimum temperature of Delhi is conducive for breeding of mosquitoes. It is therefore imperative that breeding of mosquitoes should be curbed by carrying out door-to-door surveys. This year 61 cases of malaria have been reported so far compared with 49 cases reported last year during the corresponding period.”

“Similarly, 18 dengue cases have been reported so far compared with 10 cases last year. The rise in malaria and dengue cases and high density of mosquito breeding found in several areas in Delhi is a matter of great concern for us. The MCD is carrying out steps to combat mosquito breeding, but control of these diseases is not possible without the active cooperation of citizens,” he added.

According to Mr. Jaiswal, after conducting several checks in residences and homes domestic breeding checkers of the MCD found breeding in 52,972 premises and in 50,674 cases legal notices were issued and prosecution action had been launched against 4,576 defaulters. “We have directed deputy health officials to carry out fogging operations in their respective areas after consulting councillors as well as residents’ welfare associations,” he added.
