NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union called off its hunger strike over alleged “anomalies” in the admission process this year after negotiations with the administration on Wednesday night. The JNUSU has been alleging non-fulfilment of reservation in the quota meant for the Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the admissions. On Tuesday, the Standing Committee on Admissions had agreed to set up a special committee to look into the implementation of the reservation for the Other Backward Classes at JNU this year. After discussions between the administration and the students, it was decided that another expert committee will be formed to review the overall admission policy. “This committee will comprise representatives from the students’ union, JNU Teachers’ Association and Equal Opportunities Office. It will also explore the merit of the old offer system as against the waiting list system brought about this year,” said JNUSU president Sandeep Singh on Thursday. “The administration has also assured us that all the unfilled seats in the categories of the SC/ST/OBC and PH this year will not lapse, but be carried forward to next year’s admissions,” he added. The students’ union had also asked for a position paper on how and in which manner it was implementing the OBC reservation and following the directives of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The paper was provided to them by the administration.
