Tuticorin: A high-level Air Force team visited the district on Friday to explore the possibilities of setting up air force bases at Kayathar and near the Tuticorin airport. The tem led by G.R.Prasad, senior officer (administration), Southern Air Command, Aakulam in Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), held discussions with the Collector, R. Palaniyandi. The team then inspected the 61.75 acre plot tentatively identified adjacent to the Tuticorin airport for the air station meant for military and civilian operations. Following that, the air force officials conducted an aerial survey over 991 ha ground identified at Kayathar for the expansion of air strip situated in the area into a full fledged station. Sources said that the air strip built during the pre-independence era remained non-functional for many years. The District Revenue Officer, P. Anbarasu, and senior officials of various departments accompanied him.
