MADURAI: Advances procedures in total knee replacement have been introduced at the Madurai Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (MIOT) here. The first surgery using ‘rotating platform’ technique was performed on a 65-year-old patient S. Hyder Ali from Ilayangudi recently. Hanns Peter Scharf, surgeon from Manheim in Germany, demonstrated the procedure through computer navigation on this patient who was suffering from osteo arthritis, said M. Muthuvel Rajan, joint replacement surgeon at MIOT. Dr. Rajan, in a press release, said that the patient was able to walk on the second day itself and he could do all normal activities soon. “Rotating platform knees and rotating platform with high flexion knees are the new generation knees that increase longevity of the knee and patient can sit cross-legged on the ground. This is the most advanced procedure in the field of knee replacement,” he claimed.
