SHIMLA: The CPI (M) supported Students Federation of India won three of the four key seats in the prestigious Himachal Pradesh University polls on Thursday. The Union also won majority seats of Departmental Representatives on the campus. It won 25 seats, while the ABVP won 9 and NSUI just one in various departments. Creating history, the university students also elected its first ever woman president, Shikha Chauhan, who defeated Amit Kumar of ABVP. She is daughter of CPI (M) leader O.P. Chauhan.

For the post of General Secretary, Virender Singh of SFI defeated Munish Chandel of ABVP in a close contest. Surender Sharma of SFI won the post of Joint Secretary by defeating Semma of ABVP by a slender margin. SFI lost the post of Vice President when its candidate Chand Kumari was defeated by Daleep Negi of ABVP by a margin of 25 votes. The NSUI candidates came third in all posts.

The SFI also won majority of seats in university-affiliated colleges like Theog, Government College for Girls, Shimla and Government Colleges in Una, Hamirpur, Chakmoh, Bangana and Nahan. The biggest surprise came in Hamirpur, the home town of Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and once an ABVP stronghold, where the SFI panel won all the four seats of President, Vice-President, General Secretary and Joint Secretary.

But the ABVP won in Mandi, Rampur, Sundernagar, Dharamsala, Sujanpur, Suni, Palampur and Bajnath colleges. The leaders claimed maximum number of seats in State colleges. The Congress supported NSUI won in Solan College near Shimla and PG Centre in Dharamsala.
