JAIPUR: The construction industry expects huge investments in the country in the next five years in areas related to road construction, railways, airports, power plants and urban infrastructure both by the private and the Government sectors. At present the sector is the second largest employer in the country after agriculture, accounting for three crore jobs. The construction sector contributes more than 11 per cent of the GDP. However, the experts who had gathered on Thursday on the occasion of the release of the brochure on the All India Builders Convention (BAICONEX 08), scheduled to be held here in December, conceded a possible short term setback to the sector due to the recent price hikes in building materials, especially cement and steel. The convention, which would be attended by 2,500 delegates, is slated to discuss low cost housing/construction, green buildings and the role of energy saving devices in construction, Mr. Agarwal said. The Rajasthan capital has been chosen as the venue for the two-year convention of the Builders Association of India (BAI) due to the big potential the City and the State hold in the coming construction boom, he added. An exhibition, which will have 450 participants from the country and abroad, would be put up simultaneously with the convention from December 18 to 22, Mr. Agarwal said.
