PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar on Friday stressed the importance of conducting awareness campaigns in rural areas on corrective surgery for hypospadias through special educational campaigns and mass media.

Hypospadias is a congenital anomaly affecting the urinary passage of male babies.

Inaugurating the second operative workshop on hypospadias, organised by the Department of Plastic Surgery of JIPMER, he said people were not aware of the consequences of the deformity and the necessity of early correction.

“One could imagine the status of awareness of this deformity among the rural people, when awareness in urban areas is itself minimal. Awareness of the need for carrying out corrective surgery must be created among public,” he said.

On the incidence and consequences of hypospadias, he said one out of every 300 newborn males were likely to suffer from hypospadias.

“If not attended to at an early stage, the abnormality would cause problems in urination and sexual life when the child grows up,” he said.

With JIPMER organising conferences, workshops and education programmes on a regular basis, he said, “Frequent interactions and exchange of ideas are essential to maintain high standard of academics as well as patient care.”

Director of JIPMER K.S.V.K. Subba Rao said the institute had progressed over the years and grown to become a premier medical institute in this part of the country.

“In the last couple of years, we had a lot of expansion going on in the institute, including the inauguration of a nursing college, hostel and regional cancer institute. A 360-bed state-of-the-art super speciality block is being constructed. It will have 12 operating theatres and 50 intensive care beds. Latest equipment such as MRI and digital X-ray will be available shortly,” he said.

Plastic surgeons, urologists, paediatric surgeons and general surgeons from across the country and abroad are participating in the workshop. Head of Plastic Surgery of JIPMER Karoon Agrawal, Chief Medical Officer K.N. Panda, Consultant Plastic Surgeon S.P. Bajaj and Secretary of International Society for Hypospadias Surgery D.K. Gupta spoke.
