dated August 23, 1958: Improving road safety

Mr. Bishnuram Medhi, Governor of Madras, inaugurating the Traffic Week organised by the city police at a function held at the Rajarathnam Stadium, Madras, on August 22 made a fervent appeal to all road-users to adhere strictly to the traffic rules and help in the prevention of unhappy accidents resulting in the loss of life and property. Mr. F.V. Arul, Commissioner of Police, said that the traffic accident rate in the city had been increasing steadily over the years and the annual figure had reached the region of 4,000, of which about 50 were fatal accidents. Mr. Arul explained that, there had been a phenomenal increase in the number of vehicles on our roads, which were never intended to carry such a huge volume of traffic. It implied broadening of the roads, construction of fly-over roads, provision of round-abouts and refuge islands, and marking of pedestrian crossings and subways.
