Corrections and clarifications

The caption of the page 1 photograph and the report inside (August 21, 2008) on Sushil Kumar claiming the bronze medal in the 66kg Men’s Freestyle wrestling event at the Beijing Olympics on Wednesday, used the term the repechage rounds. Readers asked what it meant. According to Wikipedia, “Repechage (from the French repêchage), meaning ‘to rescue’ or ‘to save’, is a practice amongst ladder competitions that allows participants who failed to meet qualifying standards by a small margin to continue to the next round. In karate, judo, taekwondo, and wrestling tournaments, single elimination brackets are used to determine the two athletes who will compete in the final match for first and second place. The repechage bracket is built by selecting all athletes who were knocked out by the finalists and building brackets to determine third place. Repechage addresses the possibility of two top competitors meeting in an early round, allowing the loser a chance to compete for a bronze medal.”

In the “Results at a Glance” column (“Sport – Olympics”, August 21, 2008), the Beach Volleyball Men’s semifinals result said “Rogers & Dalhausser (USA) bt Geor & Gia (Georgia) 21-11, 21-13 ….” It should have been Rogers & Dalhausser (USA) bt Jorge Terceiro and Renato Gomes. (Geor and Gia were the names that appeared in the official site of the Games for Jorge Terceiro and Renato Gomes.)

The “Results at a Glance” column (“Sport – Olympics”, August 20, 2008) for football said “Men’s Semifinals: Nigeria 4 (Olubayo Adefemi, Chinedu Obasi Oguke 2, Chibuzor Okonkwo) bt Belarus 1 (Laurent Ciman)”. It should have been Nigeria beat Belgium 4-1. In the same column, the handball results appeared as separate set scores when they should have been the two teams’ total points.
