Rain hits normal life in Cuttack

Correspondent

Many of the roads in the city are damaged

Some 100 pumps are being used to clear water-logging

People have shifted to safer places after the rain

Treading Warily: A scene in the low-lying area after the rain lashed Cuttack on Friday.

CUTTACK: Several residential colonies in low-laying areas of Cuttack city were water-logged after a heavy downpour on Friday morning. Hundreds of people in the city were seen moving to safer places while many others remained indoors as their houses were inundated with water.

The Cuttack Municipal Corporation as usual was found shaky in its approach to clear the water-logging as the drains across the city have all been choked.

The problem aggravated as most of the roads in the city are damaged while many others are under repair making the commuters to suffer .

Fire brigade

“We have pressed into operation at least 100 pumps at the crucial points to clear the water-logging but we need another 50 pumps to clear the water from residential areas”, said the city Deputy Mayor Madhusudan Sahu.

We have also asked the State fire brigade to provide some heavy-duty pumps for the purpose, Sahu informed.

Looking at the gigantic volume of work, pumps would not be enough to drain out water in next 24 hours”, said a municipal engineer overlooking the work. He said although over hundred pumps are now in operation, many of them are defunct while quite a few of them are not running due to lack of fuel.

Inundated areas

People in low-laying areas of Gamhadia, Friends’ colony, Pattapola, Suta Hat, Rausapatna, Badambadi labour colony, Mahanadi vihar, Gandarpur, Kalyan Nagar, the satellite township of CDA at Markatnagar, High court colony, Ganga Mandir, Buxi Bazaar and Thoria Sahi were the worst sufferers as they were unable to come out from their houses.

These areas were submerged with waist-deep rainwater mixed with muck-filled drain water.
