PAT: Reeta Harish Thakkar, Pudukottai Collector, giving away a prize to a winner in the competition on ‘non-conventional energy’ on Thursday. PUDUKOTTAI: The use of non-conventional energy equipment was underlined by speakers at a seminar organised as part of the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day’ celebrations here on Thursday. Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar, who inaugurated the seminar, expressed serious concern over the depleting sources such as lignite and coal due to growing demand for energy. Pointing out that the renewable energy equipment would be the right alternative to meet future challenges, she said that proper utilisation of non-conventional energy techniques and marketing the equipment at a lower price would encourage the masses to shift to such sources. Pointing out that waste products including garbage could be utilised for generation of power, Ms. Reeta appealed to the people to desist from over-exploitation of conventional energy sources. Superintendent of Police P. Moorthi spoke on the significance of generation and application of non-conventional energy sources to prevent the challenges being posed by global warming and depleting ozone layer. Kings Engineering College Principal P. Arumugam and Superintending Engineer, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, S. M. Vijayakumar were among those who spoke on the uses of low-cost non-conventional energy equipment. The Collector gave away prizes to winners in elocution, essay-writing and painting competitions for school and college students, held earlier as part of the celebrations.
