PUDUKOTTAI: Agriculturists, who participated in the monthly ‘Farmers Grievances Day’ meeting held here on Friday, voiced concern over the proposed Indian-manufactured foreign liquor bottling unit planned to be set up in Kallaakottai village in Gandarvakottai block. They expressed their apprehension that the proposed unit will be detrimental to the groundwater potential of the peripheral zone and urged the district administration to initiate prompt action to protect the interests of the farmers. Initiating a discussion, district secretary of CPI-led Tamizhnadu Vivasayigal Sangam S. P. Muthukumaran said that though industrial development was imperative for the socio-economic development of this backward district, adequate care should be taken to ensure that the setting up of this unit did not result in massive extraction of groundwater through giant borewells, leading to depletion of the irrigation source. Another farmer, Bala Andar, said that groundwater potential in and around Gandarvakottai would deplete seriously once the bottling unit was commissioned. Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar, who presided over the meeting, assured them that the district administration would carefully consider their apprehensions. Referring to the extensive damage caused by gale to plantain crop, Mr. Muthukumaran also wanted a fair indemnity to banana-cultivators. The implementation of crop insurance scheme should be regulated to benefit the farmers during calamities, he added. Fertilizer cell formedThe Collector said that a special district-level ‘fertilizer monitoring cell’ has been constituted for proper distribution of the fertilizer to the farmers. About 2,076 tonnes of urea and 1,406 tonnes of DAP and 1,274 tonnes of potash had been stocked.
