‘No lawyer appeared in any case and all the cases were adjourned’ ‘The strike was peaceful and successful’ NEW DELHI: With lawyers of all four district courts in the city abstaining from work on Friday to protest against the Delhi High Court’s decision to bar two senior advocates from practicing for four months, litigants had to bare the brunt. The one-day strike at Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Karkardooma and Rohini courts was in response to the call given by the coordination committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi against “usurping of the powers of the Bar Council of Delhi by the High Court in imposing a ban on senior advocates -- R.K. Anand and I.U. Khan -- for practicing in the High Court and subordinate courts for four months”. The Bar Associations said the High Court could only impose punishment under the law and does not have jurisdictional competence to interfere in the powers vested with the Bar Council of the States, which alone can take away the licence of practice of an advocate for misconduct. The lawyers whose matters were listed in courts had sought adjournments in support of the strike call. According to Coordination Committee All Bar Associations of Delhi coordinator Jatan Singh, the strike was peaceful and successful. “No lawyer appeared in any case on Friday and all the cases were adjourned. Lawyers have shown concern over the judgement of the court.”
