Stalin inaugurates projects in Villupuram

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: The dreams of E.V.Ramasamy Naicker to provide economic emancipation and equal rights to women are becoming a reality under the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime, Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin has said.

He was speaking at an official function organised at the Collectorate here on Friday.

Mr. Stalin said that Tamil Nadu, under the stewardship of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, was the first to implement the Nagarapalika Panchayat Raj Act, the brainchild of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in the local bodies.

Because of this, women had now become Mayors, panchayat union chairpersons and panchayat presidents. Participation of women in the local bodies was up to 40 to 45 per cent, Mr. Stalin said.

Mr. Stalin laid foundation stones and inaugurated projects worth over Rs. 254 crore.
