Chennai: The adidas-MCC National junior tennis championships, conducted by the Madras Cricket Club, commences here on Saturday with the boys’ and girls’ qualifying rounds to be held on Saturday and Sunday. The boys’ main draw begins on August 25 at the Madras Cricket Club, Krishnan Tennis Centre, Gandhinagar Club, Madras Gymkhana Club, Cosmopolitan Club, TNTA (Egmore), Presidency Club, SDAT and Team Tennis. The girls’ main draw matches will begin on August 26. Held under the auspices of the AITA and the TNTA, the 16th edition of the tournament will take place in the boys’ and girls’ under-18 and under-14 singles and doubles categories, with the finals scheduled for August 30. A total of 642 entries have been received. Maharashtra’s Ronak Manuja is the boys’ under-18 top seed, while Ronit Bisht has been given the top billing in the under-14 category. The girls’ under-18 and under-14 top seeds are Rashmi Teltumbde (Maharashtra) and Prarthana Thombare (Maharashtra) respectively. Some of the other prominent under-18 players include Abhijeet Tiwari (Chandigarh), Chandril Sood (UP), Christopher Marquis (Maharashtra), J. Mohit Mayur (TN), Rishabdev (TN), R. Raman (TN), Irfan Hussain (TN), Tanvi.R. Shah (Maharashtra), Kyra Shroff (Maharashtra), Prerna Bhambri (Del), Sharon. S. Paul (TN) and Asha Saravana Mohan (TN).
Wild cards: Boys: U-18: P. Bhagirath (AP), Vinay Kamineni (AP), Viswajit Tirumurthy (TN) and Gugan Verma (TN). U-14: Rishab Agarwal (AP), Atul Sri Patel (UP), Keerthi Rangan (TN) and Vignesh Prabhu (TN). Girls: U-18: Teekima Iska (AP), Shwetha Solanki (Del), Shahin Ansari (TN) and C. Rajeswari (TN). U-14: Isha Budwol (MP), Jasvinee Singh (MP), A. Sharmila (TN) and Kavya Bharath (TN). — Sports Reporter
