Haridwaramangalam A.K.Palanivel honoured with Maharajapuram Santhanam Memorial Award

CHENNAI: The Maharajapuram Santhanam Foundation on Friday honoured thavil vidwan Haridwaramangalam A.K.Palanivel with the Maharajapuram Santhanam Memorial Award for his contribution to Carnatic music and towards popularising the instrument.

The Foundation also presented ‘Meritorious Awards for Excellence’ to violinist Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, mridangist Mannarkoil J.Balaji and ghatam player Tripoonithura N.Radhakrishnan.

Ashok Leyland Managing Director R.Seshasayee, who presented the awards, appreciated Mr.Palanivel’s efforts in popularising the instrument the world over.

Tamil scholar Va.Ve.Su spoke about Mr.Palanivel’s service as the secretary of the Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha, which conducts the annual Thyagaraja Aradhana at Tiruvaiyaru.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Palanivel recalled how his father had objected to his becoming a Thavil player but he had persisted.

Right motivation

In her speech Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi said that the award was not only recognition but also motivates young artists to achieve greater heights.

Maharajapuram Srinivasan said that the Foundation had been giving away awards to artists since 1993. City Union Bank Senior General Manager S.Sridharan offered felicitations.
