Tuticorin: In a major crackdown on violators of traffic rules, the police have booked about 200 cases over two days ending Saturday. Police sources said that the special drive was initiated to bring down the accident rate in the district. Of the total cases, about 40 were registered against two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets while driving. Besides, cases were booked against people for drunken driving and for using dazzling lights at night. 15,635 cases bookedAs many as 15,635 cases had been booked against those who had violated road safety norms and a fine of Rs. 19.68 lakh was collected from them during the first six months of this year. Of that, 3,276 motorcycle riders were charged for not wearing helmets. A total of 3,555 people who drove vehicles without licenses had been booked. For over-speeding, fine was imposed on 418 persons. Remaining cases were booked under the heads of other violations such as overloading, parking on wrong sides, among others.
