World Anglo-Indian Day celebrated

Awards given for bravery and community service

VISAKHAPATNAM: Awards for bravery and community service were presented to Anglo-Indians by Christine Lazares, MLA from the community, here on Saturday.

Taking part as the chief guest at the World Anglo-Indian Day celebrations held at All Saints Christian Law College, she gave away the award for bravery to David Gallyot for saving a boy from drowning and the Visakha Forum for Anglo-Indian Women for community service. Jennifer Anil David and Dr. V. Vidyasagar were later honoured for their service.

Ms. Lazares thanked Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for promising to allot one per cent of houses built by AP Housing Board to the community and asked eligible Anglo-Indians to apply for white cards to avail of benefits under Rajiv Arogyasri scheme.

Struggling for She said their number was 57,000 in AP and seven lakh all over the world. “We are struggling for recognition as a community,” she said and pointed out how the revenue officials in the city were not cooperating in issuing community certificates to Anglo-Indians.

Ms. Lazares said as per rules, Anglo-Indians were eligible for reservation in jobs and educational institutions.

Applications

The MLA confirmed receipt of 21 applications from BPL families for sanction of houses under JNNURM and 32 for scholarships.

Visakha Forum for Anglo-Indian (women) president Jacqueline D’Cruz , Vice-President Yolander Magiuinness, Secretary Hilda Hoyle, Joint Secretary Mary Heron Yang and others were present.
