Educating police personnel on human rights

PUDUCHERRY: The Police Department on Saturday organised a seminar on human rights for its personnel.

Justice J.A.K. Sampathkumar, former Judge of Madras High Court, briefed the policemen on topics such as custodial crime and human rights, human rights violation and birth of terrorism due to human rights violation. Mr. Kumar said the preamble of the Constitution of India provides necessary provision to guarantee the dignity of the individual. Every citizen enjoyed several fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and speech.

He appealed to the policemen to handle cases pertaining to weaker sections and women with extreme caution.

Mr. Kumar also highlighted various articles that dealt with fundamental rights.

Director-General of Police A.S. Khan said it was mandatory for the policemen to follow the 11 guidelines issued by the Supreme Court to ensure protection of human rights. Stressing the need to protect the rights of the individual, he said the enactment of Human Rights Act and the setting up of National Human Rights Commission was aimed at ensuring protection of the rights of the individual.

Lectures on topics such as ‘Role of police in protecting the rights of weaker section of society,’ ‘Role of police in protecting the rights of woman and children,’ ‘Supreme Court on human rights’ and ‘Human rights and role of police’ were also conducted.

Inspector-General of Police S. Vasudeva Rao, Senior Superintendent of Police (Crime and Intelligence) B. Srikanth and Senior Government Pleader for Puducherry in the High Court of Madras T. Murugesan made presentations.

Around 100 policemen from the rank of Sub-Inspectors to Superintendents of Police attended the training programme held at the Chief Secretariat.
