RASIPURAM: The country should try to utilise the opportunities provided under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regime to ensure sustainable development and strengthen its science and technology capabilities, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances & Law and Justice E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan has said.

Trade barriers

Inaugurating the Commerce Association at the Muthayammal College of Arts and Science here on Saturday, he spoke on the impact of globalisation on Indian economy. The WTO regime had not only removed the trade barriers but also facilitated the skilled manpower in the country to take key jobs in various countries in the world, he pointed out

India, a member of the WTO, has a large pool of skilled human resource, particularly in the field of science and technology.

Manpower

The world requires technical manpower from the country in several sectors, including automobile, hospitality, biotechnology, information technology, leather and pharmaceuticals, he added.

The Indo-US nuclear agreement, he said, was necessary as it would help improve the country’s strength in the atomic power sector.

It would also create a large number of job opportunities for the youth with technical skills.

Advocating a change in the present education system, he suggested that the country needed a flexible system that would facilitate the students to equip themselves with skills matching the industry requirements.

College chairman R. Ramasamy, Principal M. Sundararajan and Head of the Department of Commerce M.N. Periasamy spoke. Faculty members and students were present.
