Consumer forum orders compensation for delay

Staff Reporter

Gives direction to Theni Collector and officials

THENI: The Theni District Consumer Redressal Forum (TDCRF) directed the Collector, District Supply Officer and Bodi supply officer to pay a compensation of Rs. 25,000 to a complainant for inordinate delay in renewing ration card here on Friday.

The petitioner, Pechiammal of VOC Nagar in Bodi, had filed a complainant with the TDCRF stating that she had applied for renewal of ration card in 2005 in Bodi Supply office. Her card was not renewed till April 2007.

She wanted to know the fate of her application.

She sought clarification from the supply office under Right to Information Act in April, 2007. But there was no response from it.

In a fit of disgust, Pechiammal filed a case with the forum in February this year. The Bodi supply office had renewed her card on February 18, 2008.

On hearing the case, The TDCRF chairman Sankaranarayanan Pillai and member Gopi Jayanthi, observed that said it was deficiency of service and ordered the Collector, District Supply Officer and Bodi supply officer to pay a compensation of Rs.10,000 for mental agony, fine of Rs.10,000 for deficiency in service and Rs.5,000 as costs within three months.

In another case, the chairman also directed Theni municipality to pay a compensation of Rs.25,000 with 12 per cent interest within three months to a man who applied for a drinking water connection.

Karnan of Alli Nagaram had remitted a deposit of Rs.4,000 and Rs.1,940 for other expenses with Theni Municipality for a drinking water connection to his house, in August 18, 2004. When he contacted in December 2004, the municipal officials informed that encroachment had delayed provision of drinking connection to him.

In February 2008, the municipality refused to give connection as the area was under encroachment.

On hearing a complaint filed by Karnan in April, 2008, the judge and the member stated the municipality had given 960 domestic drinking water connection in that area. They directed the municipality to pay a compensation of Rs.25,000 to the complainant and Rs.5,000 as costs within three months.
