No opposition to Upper Bhadra Project: MLC

Staff Correspondent

Vested interests spreading rumours, says Shivayogiswamy

‘Verify reports before staging protests’

Project to be completed in five years

DAVANGERE: Shivayogiswamy, Chief Whip in the Legislative Council and president of the Davangere unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, has said neither Agriculture Minister S.A. Ravindranath nor the BJP Government is opposed to the Upper Bhadra Project. A few vested interests have been creating confusion by spreading rumours, he said.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Shivayogiswamy said the BJP, after assuming office, had approved the Upper Bhadra Project and earmarked funds for it. One of the Ministers who approved the project was Mr. Ravindranath, he said and called upon the people of Chitradurga to verify reports before jumping to conclusions. Referring to the agitation here on Friday, where some associations burnt Mr. Ravindranath’s effigy protesting against his alleged statements against the project, he asked the people to remain calm.

Report

Mr. Shivayogiswamy said that 21 tmcft of water had been allocated to Chitradurga, Tumkur and Kolar districts under the project. Fifteen tmcft would come from the Tunga canal and the remaining 6 tmcft from the Bhadra canal. A huge quantity of water in the Bhadra canals was being wasted through seepage. Once the canals were modernised, lots of water could be saved.

Thirty-seven tanks in Chitradurga and 119 tanks in Tumkur and Kolar districts would be filled with water from the Bhadra through the project. The groundwork for the project was already on and the tender process had already been completed. The Upper Bhadra Project would be completed in the next five years, he said and added that Mr. Ravindranath’s statements were misrepresented.
