Delay in execution of project decried

Staff Correspondent

‘Upper Bhadra Project issue is being used only to garner votes’

Chitradurga: By delaying the implementation of the Upper Bhadra Project, the Government is testing the patience of the people of the district, Principal of the Government Pre-University College of Challakere, Yadav Reddy, has said.

Speaking after releasing a book titled “Abhivruddhige Teredukollada Haadi” written by Gangadharnaik here on Saturday, he said the book highlighted several reasons for the backwardness of the district, including the delay in implementing the Upper Bhadra Project. He said successive governments had used the issue merely to garner votes, but failed to deliver. “It is well known that Chitradurga district is drought prone. Yet very little has been done to provide water here,” he said.

Mobilisation

Mr. Reddy said even the elected representatives of the district had failed to take up the issue. Agitations were not enough, and they should mobilise people, mainly farmers, to fight for the project, he said.

Referring to mining in the district, he said the writer had tried to critically analyse its impact on the social and economical fabric of the district.

“Due to rampant illegal mining, natural resources here have been depleted. Although the business involves an enormous amount of money, it has not yet helped the poor. Only a handful of people have benefited from it,” he said. He regretted that the tourism potential of the district had not been properly explored. “Chitradurga district has several monuments that can be developed to promote tourism,” he said. He said Mr. Gangadharnaik had, however, not considered a few crucial aspects that were equally important for the overall development of the district, such as literacy.

“Illiteracy is one of the main reasons why the district is backward. The writer should have given more emphasis to the subject,” he said.
