Belgaum
Belgaum: Of the 1,199 freedom fighters arrested in the State during the freedom struggle, 664 were from Belgaum, N.V. Shirgaonkar, history lecturer at the R.D. College in Chikkodi, has said. He was speaking at a seminar on the “Role of Belgaum district in freedom struggle” organised by the Department of Information and the Raibag Composite Pre-University Junior College at Raibag on Friday. He said a large number of freedom fighters were inspired by the Non-Cooperation Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi. They participated in protests and demonstrations against the foreign rule. The figure shows that more than half of the freedom fighters arrested in Karnataka during that time were from Belgaum alone, he said and added that the role of Belgaum in freedom struggle was glorious and significant. People from Belgaum also participated in the struggle against British imperialism during the regimes of Tipu Sultan and Rani Chennmma of Kittur. Vice-principal of Vivekanand Kala Mandir, Raibag, P.I. Pattar was among those who spoke, according to a press release here on Saturday.
