Boxing championship gets under way

BERHAMPUR: With dreams and hopes of Olympic award winner, Vijendar Singh in their eyes over 150 young boxers of Orissa reached Berhampur on Saturday to participate in the All Orissa State Boxing championship.

This championship was inaugurated by State Minister Suryanarayan Patro at the Berhampur stadium on Saturday evening. It is being organised by the Ganjam unit of the Orissa Amateur Boxing Association (OABA) with support of the Ganjam District Athletic Association. Vice-president of OABA Prabhakar Rao said the tournament would be the platform to select the State senior boxing team that would participate in the senior national tournament to be held in Punjab from Sept 5. The participants would match their punches in junior, sub-junior, senior men and senior women groups. There would be bouts in every category from light fly weight to super heavy weight, said senior coach and member of the organising committee Sisir Panigrahy.

Ashok Sahu, secretary of Ganjam District Athletic Association, said it’ll be an event where the young generation would get chance to interact with international boxers like Mamata Panda. Other top boxers of the State, who are participating in the tournament include Swarnarekha Biswal, Sasmita Das, Sukant Dalei and Krushna Chandra Gouda.
