BHUBANESWAR: Realising the shortage of manpower in the finance sector, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is all set to roll out an accounting technicians’ course, which would create second tier professionals to chartered accountants in the country.

“With demand for professionals in finance sector going up fast, there is a need for second-tier professionals with a basic knowledge of accounting. The new course which will be launched this year would cater to the needs,” said K. Raghu, member of central council on the sidelines of ICAI’s diamond jubilee conference here on Saturday.

Mr. Raghu said there were about 1.5 lakh chartered accounts registered with ICAI and feedback from industries suggested the demand for such professionals would double within the next few years.

e-learning system

Similarly, the premier institute would create more professionals to meet the demands when International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) would be adopted globally from 2011, he said.

Moreover, the ICAI will launch an e-learning system for its members as part of its Continued Professional Education (CPE), said Mr. Raghu who is heading the programme at the institute.

Need for professionals

Inaugurating the event, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said growth of the IT sector had redefined the role of financial professionals. “We have to reorient our education to the changing need of our business. Professionals like chartered accountants can play an important role not only in business but in Government programmes,” Mr. Patnaik said.

He said the State had received investment to the tune of over Rs.60,0000 crore while Rs. 30,0000 crore of projects were already under implementation. “We are also promoting downstream industries in a big way. All these industries will need professionals to solve their problems.”

The conference, being jointly organised by regional councils of both Cuttack and Bhubaneswar branches, was attended by 800 delegates, many of whom were top corporate executives from within and outside the State.

Among others, State finance minister Prafulla Ghadai, executive director of WIPRO Suresh Senapati and Nirupam Haldar, chairman of ICAI’s eastern region spoke on the occasion.
