Tirupur: The importance of basic sciences and humanities among students is declining day by day.

There is a general opinion that these disciplines do not help one get a lucrative job. Employment alone should not be seen as the purpose of education, V. Rajagopalan, Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Coimbatore, said here on Friday.

Delivering the graduation day address at L.R.G. Government Arts College for Women, he said that the study of basic sciences was required to turn the attention of youth towards such disciplines to encourage good research. “Good education should not only result in good jobs, but also in quality research,” he said.

Neglected areas

“Students should know that there are many opportunities in areas other than the much sought after ones; for example, the Information Technology sector.

Another neglected area is the civil services.

We need more youth to come forward to become civil servants,” Mr. Rajagopalan urged students.

He was also concerned over not enough women pursuing education.

Appointments

“Though it has increased to a great extent, it is still not enough with special reference to higher education. The situation should improve a lot. It is important for women to be educated,” he asserted.

Speaking about new appointments in Government colleges, he said the State Government had recruited 1,050 lecturers in 2007.

“A backlog of 520 appointments has been cleared this year. Interviews are going on for selecting 1,000-odd more lecturers”.

He distributed degree certificates to 359 candidates and gold medal to toppers.

Principal S. Radhai also spoke during the function.
