NEW DELHI: A special court was held in Tihar Court complex on Saturday to dispose of cases of petty offenders in jail. The court was presided by Metropolitan Magistrate Ashutosh Kumar. The Special Court took up 20 cases all of which were disposed of the same day. These cases were screened by finger print bureau of Delhi Police to eliminate habitual offenders. This was the ninety-third court in succession and till date 4,372 cases of petty offenders have been decided by these special courts organised at Tihar Courts Complex. The Jail authorities said these courts are being held on regular basis in the Tihar Jail premises, on the direction of former Chief Justice of India A.S. Anand, to dispose of petty cases of the undertrials who are willing to confess their crime. According to a release issued by the office of the Director General (Prisons), these courts are providing very useful service for the prisoners lodged in jail as they have the opportunity to settle their cases at an early date instead of waiting for years before the regular courts. The working of Special Court has strengthened the criminal justice system through speedy disposal of cases, the release said.
