Mayawati inaugurating the Gautam Buddha University. Noida: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress accusing them of misleading the farmers on the issue of land acquisition which led to a clash between agitators and police leaving four persons dead last month. Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the first session of Gautam Buddha University here she said, while the land was acquired by the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav Governemnt in October 2006 with the support of Congress, SP is now “misleading” the farmers on the issue of acquisition and compensation.
She said her government has more than doubled the amount of compensation for farmers from Rs.402 per sq. mt. to Rs.850 per sq. mt. with retrospective effect from April 1, 2007 and adopted a “liberal” land acquisition policy to help farmers. “A full time officer has been posted to complete the compensation process and disburse the money to the farmers...Rs.17,000 crore has already been disbursed which is more than what the previous government had disbursed,” she said. — PTI
