Ratnagireeswarar temple set for facelift

Picnic spots Mayanur and Nerur to be developed

KARUR: The famed Ratnagireeswarar temple at Ayyarmalai is all set to get a facelift with amenities to be increased at an estimated cost of Rs. 50 lakh.

Proposals to the effect have been forwarded to the State Government.

Similarly, plans are on the anvil to develop picnic spots such as Mayanur and Nerur in Karur district with aid from the Department of Tourism.

A recent meeting of the Tourism Development Committee held here took stock of the state of tourism in the district and discussed ways to it attractive to tourists.

Agreeing that there has been a long-pending demand from the devotees and the public to improve amenities at the temple, the committee decided that basic and infrastructure development works would be taken up once the State Government gave the nod and sanctioned the amount through the Department of Tourism.

Similarly, the committee also discussed plans to develop Kadambavaneswarar temple at Kulithalai, the ancient temple at Pazhaya Jayamkonda Cholapuram, Balasubramanian Swamy temple at Velayuthampalayam and Sri Sadasiva Brahmendrar Adhishtanam at Nerur.

Proposals would soon be finalised and forwarded to the State Government regarding their improvement, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said after the meeting. Proposals would be prepared for development of handicraft articles made from banana fibre, ready made garments, home textiles, kitchen and table linen, bronze and granite statue carving.

Eco-picnic spot

Mr. Venkatesh said that plans were under way to shape an ‘eco-picnic spot” at the Rengamalai Reserved Forests area on the edge of the district.

Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, S. Namagiri , District Forest Officer P. Thangavelu, District Tourism Officer, Tiruchi, P. Pushparaj, officials from the Public Works Department, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and local bodies participated in the deliberations.
