Plea to set up farmers’ welfare department

Government urged to introduce pension scheme

Measures to revive farm sector hailed

Thiruvananthapuram: The All-India Kisan Sabha has urged Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to expedite steps to introduce a pension scheme for farmers and establish a farmers’ welfare department.

A memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister here on Saturday by the Sabha’s general secretary, Satyan Mokeri, and other leaders raised the issue.

While congratulating the Chief Minister for the State government’s proactive measures to revive the farm sector, the memorandum expressed deep anguish at the government’s inability to overcome technicalities to establish the pension scheme. While many sections of society had been brought under various welfare schemes, nothing had been instituted for farmers.

The Sabha wanted the Chief Minister to take the initiative in setting up the farmers’ welfare department in the true tradition of the Left parties that had taken several progressive steps in this direction in the past. The M.S. Swaminathan Commission had recommended setting up the department years ago, while the Left Democratic Front government had included a promise in the Governor’s address to the Assembly.
