Rs.4 crore fake currency seized

BASTI (U.P.): A Reserve Bank of India team has found fake currency notes worth Rs.4 crore in the chest of State Bank of India’s Dumariaganj branch during its checking.

The team, which had been counting the fake notes since August 1, returned on Saturday and would submit its report to the senior authorities in a few days, sources said.

The normal work of the branch, which has been suspended for the past couple of days, will resume from Monday, sources said.

A request for inquiry under the Anti-Corruption Act has been sent to the DGP against the former Station Officer of Dumariaganj, Shamsher Bahadur Singh, who had deposited Rs.8 lakh in the bank but withdrew it soon after the fake currency racket came to light, DIG of Police K.K. Tripathi said.

Permission has been sought to invoke the National Security Act against the arrested cashier of the bank Sudhakar Tripathi and Abid Sheikh, Mr. Tripathi said.

CBI probe recommended

The Uttar Pradesh government has recommended a CBI inquiry into the case.

IGP of Gorakhpur zone G.P. Sharma has been appointed as the inquiry officer to look into the allegations against Siddhartnagar Superintendent of Police, R.P. Chaturvedi, for his alleged role in the fake currency racket.

Mr. Sharma would submit his report to the authorities at the earliest, official sources said. — PTI
