Sri Krishna Janamashtami celebrated in the city

Celebrations: People throng Udupi Sri Puttige Math on the occasion of Sri Krishna Janmashtami in Bangalore on Saturday.

Bangalore: Sri Krishna Janmashtami, celebrated on Saturday, marks the beginning of a string of festivals that come in succession in the month of Shravana.

The festivities will extend to Sunday, and the entrances to temples will remain lined with footprints of the infant Krishna drawn by devotees.

Govadharna Kshetram of Udupi Sri Puttige Math on Bull Temple Road began their celebrations by singing bhajans at 6 a.m. on Saturday and will continue singing till 6 a.m. on Sunday. The math will also hold a “Krishna Vesha” competition on Sunday, where children dressed like Lord Krishna will compete to win the title of the best-dressed Krishna.

At the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple on Chord Road, the celebrations began with “abhisheka” at 6 a.m. “Jhulan Seva” for Benne Krishna followed and was carried out throughout the day.

A Krishna costume show was held at noon, which saw a number of children taking part.

The celebrations at the temple will conclude on Sunday at 10 p.m.

However, some people will celebrate the festival on Sunday and Monday depending on the calendar they follow.
