Jewellery stolen from house of retired police officer

CHENNAI: At least 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery were reported missing from the house of a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police at Thiruvanmiyur on Saturday.

The police said the burglars gained entry into the house of Raghuram of Indira Nagar, by forcing open the window in the toilet. They took away jewellery kept in the almirah on the first floor. The family members were sleeping when the theft took place.

Valuables stolen

The suitcase of a former MLA containing Rs.20,000, a mobile phone and wrist watch was reported missing from his room in the MLA Hostel here on Saturday.

The police said Sakthivel Murugan (45), former AIADMK MLA of the Ambasamudram constituency, was sleeping in room number 617 when the theft took place.

Youths missing

Four youths who went to attend a marriage in Tiruchi have been reported missing.

The police said S. Jaffer Ali (19), D. Mohammed Rafiq (19), N. Shahjahan (20) and M. Chellakhani (19) of Mannadi had left for Tiruchi by train early this week. Since then, their whereabouts were not known. Jaffer Ali’s family members claimed that he made a phone call stating that the police had detained them in connection with a drug case.

15,000 policemen for security

About 15,000 police personnel will be deployed to take care of security arrangements for the Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations in Chennai, Additional Director-General of Police and Commissioner, R. Sekar, has said.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he said senior police officers were in touch with leaders of Hindu organisations for smooth conduct of the festival. Night patrolling and vehicle checks would be intensified .
