Some cheer: Chris Dodds of the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom, distributing sweets to patients on the Rural Eye Hospital campus at St. Thomas Mount on Saturday. TAMBARAM: The Rural Eye Hospital campus of the Medical Research Foundation and Vision Research Foundation at St. Thomas Mount has been named after V.G. Appukutty, one of the pillars of Sankara Nethralaya and in whose family property the hospital and the Elite School of Optometry are functioning. At a function on Saturday, Chris Dodds, Consultant Anaesthetist, Academic Department, the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom, dedicated the hospital to the memory of Dr. Appukutty. S.S. Badrinath, chairman emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya, Medical Research Foundation, R.S.Bharathi, Alandur municipal chairman, and Kousalya Appukutty were present. Dr. Appukutty, after graduating from Stanley Medical College, served in various capacities, including Professor and Head of Paediatric Anaesthesiology and Chief Anaesthetist, at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital, Egmore. He was a trustee of Vision Research Foundation and Child’s Trust Research Foundation. He was associated with Sankara Nethralaya right from its inception and was involved in the organisation and planning of the hospital, setting up its operation theatres and anaesthesia department. He donated three acres of his family property to the Medical Research Foundation in which the C.U. Shah Rural Eye Hospital and the Elite School of Optometry are functioning. Doctors at the hospital said the objective of the Rural Eye Hospital, started in 1989, was to cater to the needs of those living in the southern suburbs of Chennai, and beyond. The operation theatre was started in 2006. In the past two years, the hospital has offered comprehensive eye care and cataract surgeries. More than 70 patients undergo comprehensive eye examination every day.
