Chidambaram lays stone for park at Kottakavadi 3 foreign companies have agreed to set up units SIVAGANGA: The Spices Board will invest Rs.18 crore on a new spices park at Sivaganga, said Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh on Saturday. The foundation for the park was laid by Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram at a function at Kottakavadi near Sivaganga. Mr. Ramesh said the proposed spices park would establish machinery for cleaning, sorting, grading, packaging, storing, sterilising and other work. The focus would be to encourage chilli, a leading crop in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and nearby districts, and turmeric crops. Though there was a demand to open the park at Salem and Erode, where turmeric crop was abundant, Mr. Ramesh said it had chosen Sivaganga basically to provide a fillip to develop the undeveloped area. Medicinal plants, being raised in and around Madurai district, would also get a boost, as it was planned to patronise farmers of medicinal plants. The Spices Board, he said, had opened a park in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh a few days ago. New parks would come up in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Mr. Chidambaram said that three companies based in South Africa, Malaysia and Sri Lanka had agreed to set up their units in the Sivaganga park. It was expected that 20 to 30 industries might be set up in the park in the near future. It would be immensely helpful to farmers of chilli, turmeric, medicinal plants and tamarind, as the focus would be to export their products. Calling upon youngsters to set up business and industrial ventures, he said there were a lot of potential investors in the district. Instead of expecting industrialists from outside to look for opportunities in the district, local investors should utilise the conducive atmosphere to start their ventures.
