IT Act being amended

Special Correspondent

To give more teeth to provisions against cyber crimes

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central government is planning to introduce a Bill in Parliament during its next session to amend the Information Technology Act to strengthen the provisions against cyber crimes, Minister for Communications and Information Technology A. Raja has said.

Dedicating to the nation a Resource Centre for Cyber Forensics (RCCF) here on Saturday, Mr. Raja said cyber crimes were bound to grow as commerce worldwide had begun to shift to cyber space. Information and Communication Technology could even become the weapon for future wars. India had to look ahead and act, he said.

He said his department had gone into the fundamentals of this issue and was getting ready the Bill specifying cyber crimes and punishments. The Bill would also specify the procedures for establishing such crimes in a court of law. There would not be a separate need for amending the Criminal Procedure Code or Evidence Act, he said.

The RCCF is a facility at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) here. While lauding the research and development work already done there, Mr. Raja said it had so far helped the law enforcing agencies to establish evidence in more than 150 cases of cyber crime in the country. He said the RCCF would be further developed to make it a centre of excellence.

He commissioned a Satellite Network of Special Schools for training teachers in understanding new methods for helping mentally challenged children. This system establishes connectivity through the EduSat of the Indian Space Research Organisation. A Mobile Telemedicine Van, taking healthcare services linked to specialty hospitals to the rural areas, too was launched by him.N. Balakrishnan, associate director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and M. Madhavan Nambiar, Special Secretary to the Department of Information Technology, New Delhi, addressed the function. C-DAC director-general S. Ramakrishnan; executive director Rajan T. Joseph; and senior director R. Ravindrakumar also spoke.
