BCCI to pay selectors

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: Indian cricket will have paid selectors for senior, junior and women’s teams, apart from new qualification criteria, as per proposals at the BCCI Working Committee meeting. Members on the senior selection committee will be paid Rs. 25 lakh annual honorarium.

Ex-internationals considered for appointment on the seniors’ panel should have retired at least 10 years ago, besides being an ex-international or with playing experience of more than 25 first-class matches. The corresponding annual payment for a junior selector is Rs. 15 lakh and women selector Rs. 5 lakh.

The proposals, to be ratified at the Board AGM next month, include a condition stating that a selector shall not be an office-bearer of the BCCI or any of its affiliated units.

Senior selection panel chairman Dilip Vengsarkar is one of the Mumbai Cricket Association vice-presidents, East Zone selector Ranjib Biswal was recently re-elected president of the Orissa Cricket Association. Sanjay Jagdale, the Central Zone selector, holds the secretary’s post in the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association.

Rajiv Shukla, one of the Board vice-presidents, said the reason for specifying the period of retirement as one of the conditions was to eliminate the chance of selectors’ contemporaries appearing on the probables list. “We do not want a situation when a player turns selector soon after retirement.”
