ERODE: Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) has submitted a proposal for the development of a mega textile cluster in Erode. The submission comes after Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram announced in the last Budget that it would develop two mega textile clusters in Erode and Bhiwandi in Maharashtra. Consequent to the announcement, the Government announced spending Rs. 70 crore for developing the Erode cluster. And, in the first phase it had allotted Rs. 10 crore. In its proposal PDEXCIL has suggested creating the cluster not at a location but spread over four to five places in Erode. “Purchasing a contiguous stretch of 100 acres is a very difficult task. Instead, the Government can have spinning and weaving at a place, processing and garment manufacturing at other places, and training and design studio at another location,” says PDEXCIL chairman M. S. Mathivanan. That apart, the proposal mainly focuses on training and infrastructure development. As for infrastructure creation, the proposal urges the Union Government to establish testing centres for yarn and fabrics, machinery and service centres. It also calls for creating of a design studio. The next important suggestion in the proposal is for creating marketing facilities.
