“Thokia used 650 SIM cards in 6 months”

Lucknow: The slain dacoit Ambika Patel alias Thokia of Uttar Pradesh used 650 SIM cards and 24 mobile phones in the last six months to evade police, top officials of the Special Task Force (STF) that gunned him down earlier this month said.

He frequently changed his SIM cards to hoodwink the police. “We were after him for a very long time and he knew that we were tapping his phones to ascertain his location,” an STF official said.

The dacoit was probably “educated” about the electronic surveillance system of the STF by a policeman, he said. The cat-and-mouse game between the STF and Thokia reached a flashpoint last year when six members of the special force were shot dead in an encounter with the dacoit’s gang. — PTI
