When heart speaks

An anthology of poems, When My Heart Speaks, by Anu Joshy, a 12th standard student, was released at a function held at the Jawahar Balabhavan in Thrissur on Saturday.

It is the first book of the young poet.

The 45 poems in the collection are distinct with their variety and intense passion. Anu, in a simple and spontaneous style, expresses her anguish, joy, hatred and surprise in poems rich in imagination.

Her work is far above what anybody can expect from a schoolgirl, says Inspector-General of Police Alexander Jacob, who wrote the preface to the book.

An Everlasting Wound is a poem pregnant with profound statements, he points out.

The poet writes: The tragedy of love is not death/The tragedy of love is not separation/The tragedy of love is but/ Indifference, sheer indifference.

The poem God’s Game compares life to a chess game.

“A poetess is born: this is the impression I got after reading the poems,” Mr. Jacob adds.

“The influence of society is very critical in the evolution of a writer,” says writer Sara Joseph, who released the book. Many female talents withdraw from the limelight at the peak of their glory because of the pressure from family and society, she points out.

“More than the talent a woman’s career and future are determined by what society expects of her.”

Daughter of K.A. Joshy, an Assistant Executive Engineer in the Irrigation Department, and Geetha, a bank manager, Anu attends Hari Sri Vidhya Nidhi School, Thrissur.

The book is published by Green Books.
