KOCHI: The American Library in Chennai catches the book lovers’ attention with its vast collection of nearly 15,000 books and extensive electronic databases. Kochiites got an overview of the resources offered by the library when its travelling exhibition reached the St. Teresa’s College here last Wednesday. The event that concluded on Saturday attracted many who wanted to know more about the facilities and services provided by the library. According to the library staff, the holdings consist of nearly 15,000 volumes, subscriptions to 140 periodicals in print, several CD-ROMs and online databases and more than 500 video programmes. The library has a good collection of books in the fields of social sciences, government, politics, economics, international relations, American history and literature and American management practices, they said. Wesley W. Robertson, Consul, Press and Information Affairs at the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai, said that the exhibition was an attempt to familiarise the public with the various services being offered by the library. Mysore K. Jagadish, Director of the library, said the library staff provided information on how residents outside Chennai can access the library’s extensive resources via mail, telephone, fax, email and the Internet. Individuals and institutions outside Chennai can enrol as members. Rules for borrowing books and the services provided will be the same as to the local members. The library will send the books by registered post and it is the member’s responsibility to return them in the same manner. Institutions having library membership will get several publications free. These include Book Alert; Alert and Web Alert; Span Magazine; and The American Library Newsletter. Subscribers can also get bibliographies and videos on request as well as information on special events. More details about the library can be had from The American Library, United States Consulate General, Gemini Circle, Chennai - 600 006. Phone: 044-2857 4000.
