Good health: A quarry worker being screened at a camp in Pudukottai on Saturday.
PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 300 stone quarry workers, a majority of them women, were screened at a free health camp for HIV, AIDS and tuberculosis organised jointly by the District Supply and Marketing Society and the Periyannan Arasu Educational and Charitable Trust here on Saturday.
“Many quarry workers, particularly women, are not aware of the incidence of these diseases and hence we organised this camp,” says the Secretary of the Society, S. Sathyaseelan.
Speaking at the inaugural of the camp, the Medical Officer, Government Blood Bank, G. Edwin, said that preventive steps would go a long way in avoiding the incidence of the diseases.
Air-borne disease
A physician, E. Sukumaran said that tuberculosis, being an air-borne disease, could spread to family members and others in the vicinity.
Proper medication could keep the disease at bay, he said.
He said that modern drug therapy could completely cure tuberculosis within six months.
Persons afflicted with the disease should not be complacent with any improvement during the course of medication, he said.
The Managing Trustee of the Trust, Sujatha and the District Panchayat councillor Manimekalai were among those who offered felicitations.
