‘Brand Jaipur’ winning over global shoppers

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Jaipur has been known for coloured stones and gemstones but its recently acquired image is of a centre for trendy jewellery embedded with precious stones. The Pink City is emerging as a brand name the world over in jewellery though the captains of the industry here say that the demand within the country has grown sufficiently and they are not need to worry about exports anymore.

Brand Jaipur has emerged in the foreign markets. The city has all the requisites of moulding itself as complete centre for jewellery needs of shoppers from within the country and abroad,” noted Vivek Kala, president, Jaipur Jewellers Association, while talking about the annual JAS 08 (Jewellers Association Show), starting here from next Thursday. “Brand Jaipur is a symbol of our culture and tradition and trustworthiness,” he asserted.

Exports of gems and jewellery from the city increased to Rs.2,044 crore during 200-08 from Rs.1,913 the previous year. “Despite the slowdown in the US, Europe and Japan, we have good advance booking for jewellery,” pointed out Kishan Das Jhanwar, honorary secretary of the Jewellers Association.

Jaipur offers a variety of jewellery embedded with precious stones, gold, silver, platinum, besides designer jewellery and the traditional Kundan-Meenakari, Tewa, Sozo and loose stones of a mind boggling variety.

“The existence of an SEZ exclusively for jewellery at Sitapura Industrial Area in the outskirts of the City has helped exports. There are 150 units manufacturing jewellery at Sitapura and the place has been a big boon to the gem and jewllery sector,” said Mr. Nirmal Barida, convener of the JAS 08 show.

With the Jaipur show the season for the jewellery shows abroad would start. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is slated to inaugurate the show titled “A legacy on colours” at Birla Auditorium.
