Protect the interest of consumers: FEDCOT

Mettupalayam: Activists of the Federation of Consumer Organisations of Tamil Nadu (FEDCOT) on Sunday staged a demonstration near the bus stand pressing for a charter of demands to protect the interest of consumers.
A release from the District Coordinator of FEDCOT, K. Mahabunisha said that the organisation demanded proper implementation of the Consumer Protection Act of 1986, reforming of the State Consumer Protection Council, ensuring proper functioning of the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum and immediate filling up of vacant positions of president and members in the district consumer redressal forum.The demonstrators questioned the rationale behind the appointment of people without any basic knowledge of consumer rights and Act as members and president of consumer forums .
They also flayed the practice of cases being delayed as against the Consumer Protection Act stipulation of disposing cases within 90 to 120 days, demanded setting up of circuit benches for speedy disposal of consumer forum cases and sought training for president and members of the consumer forum.
